Goldcorp eyes fresh luster for its treasure chest

By adding Andean Resources (AND.AX)(AND.TO) to its growing bundle of acquisitions, Canada’s Goldcorp (G.TO) will put itself in a solid position to achieve its goal of doubling bullion production by 2018.

Through its aggressiveness, Goldcorp has grown from a junior miner with revenues of $70 million in 2000 to the world’s No. 2 gold company by market capitalization, with 2009 annual revenue of more than $2.7 billion.

Toronto-Dominion Quarterly Net Up 29%

Toronto-Dominion Bank closed the third-quarter earnings season for Canada’s big banks with a 29% jump in profit, powered by strong retail-banking results in Canada and the U.S. and lower loan-loss provisions.

But TD just missed analyst expectations, reflecting the group’s mixed performance this quarter.

35th Toronto Film Festival

When you are passionate about film as an art form and a vibrant, visceral form of expression, this summer’s weak collection of bad comedies, disappointing tent pole films and assorted other by-the-numbers flicks provided about as much nourishment as day old table scraps. Inception was a full meal for the movie lover’s soul, but little else made my fellow movie fanatics perk up and say, “That was memorable.”

This is exactly why I spend my working vacation every year at the Toronto International Film Festival. The 35th TIFF takes place this year from Sept. 9-19. This will be my 23rd trip to cover the global cinematic feast. The festival has grown from an understated, unpretentious celebration of emerging filmmakers, to a film festival that officially launches the Oscar buzz season with an obscene number of major film stars abandoning the Hollywood hills for Hollywood North.

Smog advisory in effect for Toronto

Environment Canada has issued a smog and humidex advisory for Toronto as temperatures remain unusually high Tuesday.

The high is expected to reach 33 C, although it will feel more like the low 40s after factoring in humidity. The extreme heat alert issued by the City of Toronto on Monday remains in effect.

The average temperature for Aug. 31 historically is 23 C.

Rossi vows push for voter recall in Toronto

Toronto mayoral candidate Rocco Rossi says voters should be able to kick the city’s mayor or councillors out of office mid-term if they feel they are not performing well enough.

Speaking Monday at a news conference in downtown Toronto, Rossi said that if elected, he will push for the practice of voter recall, which he said will make politicians more responsive to voters.

What to expect from Hockey Summit

Just so you know, there’s no pot of gold at the end of the World Hockey Summit.

This wasn’t a Hollywood production. There was no neat, happy ending or a “Ah, so that’s what this was all about” defining moment.

Not that there weren’t plenty of moments to remember from the four-day event, but if you’re looking for something that offers tangible proof this first of its kind gathering achieved something, well, perhaps you’ll be disappointed.

Toronto approves giant flagpole

Toronto is going to build a 125-metre flagpole with the cost being picked up — like it or not — by businesses in the neighbourhood.

City council approved a plan to put up the big pole in Emery Village, near Highway 400 and Finch Avenue, on Thursday.

Coun. Giorgio Mammoliti, who has been pushing the project, says it’s about time the city invested in the neighbourhood.

Toronto FC come up short in Panama

Toronto FC lost 1-0 to Panama’s Arabe Unido and had two players sent off Tuesday in a disappointing night’s play in the CONCACAF Champions League group stage.

Arabe Unido defender Fidel Caesar scored in the 40th minute on a corner after the ball bounced to him off a teammate’s shoulder. Caesar controlled the ball with his thigh and volleyed it home with his right foot. Gabe Gala tried to clear but was positioned behind the goal-line.

Eastwood, Springsteen to star at Toronto fest

Clint Eastwood, Bruce Springsteen, Natalie Portman and Catherine Deneuve are among the 500 actors, directors and celebrities to attend the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) here from Sep 9.

Announcing the list for the interacting programme Mavericks and its official film schedule,
TIFF announced on Tuesday that filmmakers Philip Seymour Hoffman, Kelly Reichardt, Davis Guggenheim, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Ken Loach and Paul Laverty, musician Bruce Springsteen, athlete Steve Nash, educator Geoffrey Canada, producer Lesley Chilcott and Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates will be coming to town.

Several G20 accused have charges dropped

The Crown is not proceeding with the criminal cases against a large number of the hundreds of people who were in court Monday on charges related to protests during June’s G20 summit in Toronto.

Many of the first people to appear had their cases put over until the fall, and lawyers for the protesters expected the charges against roughly 75 people would be dropped, the CBC’s Michelle Cheung said.
